Box-type media players

A streaming media player is what connects your television or home theater to the Internet and allows you to stream video and music from online services. They're typically very basic devices with only a few connections, such as video (HDMI and/or composite), audio (RCA and/or digital), and Ethernet networking jacks.
The Mediabox is the easiest way to watch both on-demand and live TV over the internet. You can start streaming video content from as little as a 2mbps connection to the internet. The Mediabox is an innovative new device that completely eclipses any media hub you have heard about in the past
The WD TV HD Media Player is full HD 1080p video playback and is an ultra-compact, USB 2.0 device that attaches to an entertainment unit through a variety of audio/video interfaces and supports playback of major audio, video, and image file formats

Apple TV

The Apple TV lets you stream all the video content in the iTunes Store to your HDTV, with purchases stored in the cloud. Netflix, Hulu, HBO, YouTube and dozens of other online services are available, plus music, videos, and photos can be streamed from iOS devices using AirPlay

It will likely require a subscription of $30 - $40 per month. The bottom line is there is no specific Apple TV subscription fee required in order for you to use the device, but much of the content you might want to access does require a subscription.
